The Sky is not the limit for Parachutists
The 2016 Norfolk Festival is over £20,000 better off as a result of a comment made over dinner by W. Bro. Maurice King. He said he wanted to perform a parachute jump to celebrate his 80th birthday and that it would be a good idea to get sponsorship to go towards the Festival. The idea was keenly accepted by The Festival Committee and, like Topsy, it just grew and grew.
Other Freemasons in the Province said they would like to have a go and on 12th April 2012, 46 sponsored jumpers comprising of masons, wives, partners and family assembled at Ellough Airfield near Beccles in Suffolk. They were keenly supported by about 250 spectators and, in slightly overcast conditions, took to the sky with their tandem partners to make the jump into the open void from about 10,000 feet. Everyone made the jump without any mishap, although some looked paler than others when reporting back to base.
The Deputy Provincial Grand Master, V.W. Bro. Stephen Allen thanked all those who took part and announced that their fantastic efforts had made it a very memorable day and that over £20,000 had been raised.
The Future of Freemasonry report
-Embargoed-until-00-01hrs-9-March-2012---The-Future-of-Freemasonry---SIRC-Report---full-(2)_Page_01.jpg)
-
The Freemasons have launched a ground-breaking new report – The Future of Freemasonry.
-
It is the first ever independent study conducted by a non-Masonic body - the respected Social Issues Research Centre (SIRC) in Oxford.
-
The report dispels many of the commonly held myths and sheds new light on Freemasonry.
-
It suggests that contrary to much misleading commentary, Freemasonry demonstrates genuine openness and transparency, and concludes that it is arguably more relevant today than ever before.
-
The report has been commissioned as part of the build-up to the United Grand Lodge of England’s tercentenary in 2017.
-
The report highlights:
-
That Freemasonry acts as a ‘constant’, providing members with a unique combination of friendship, belonging and structure, with many Masons saying they have made valuable lifelong friendships.
-
The importance that Freemasonry places on charitable giving - Freemasons are the largest charitable givers after the National Lottery, and also make major contributions to international disaster relief funds.
-
Alongside the report, a quantitative survey among non-Masons was conducted – it showed that:
-
Nearly half (49%) want to know more about Freemasonry.
-
A quarter of male respondents (26%) would consider joining.
-
Of these, 68% would like to belong to a group/make new friends - 58% would like to do more in the community.
-
Of those men who would not consider becoming a Mason, the single biggest response (given by 40%) was the misconception that “it’s not for people like me”. Freemasonry is actually open to all men regardless of race, religion, political views or social standing.

What is the Universities Scheme?
Tradition and continuity are two of the values which characterise the relationship between Freemasonry and universities. It was nearly 200 years ago that the first university lodge was founded at Oxford, and since then, it has introduced many thousands of young men to Freemasonry.

In Norfolk the East Anglian Air Ambulance based at Norwich Airport benefited by £4,000 when the Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro. John Rushmer, assisted by his Grandson William, handed over a cheque for £4,000 to EAAA Chief Executive, Tim Page.

William enjoyed his time getting to know the controls of one of the rescue helicopters.
